Advantages of Heavy-Duty Bearing Grease for the Mining Industry

Calcium sulfonate greases are commonly used in automotive, agriculture, construction, mining, paper production, iron and steel mills and the food industry. Specific automotive applications include chassis, ball joints, universal joints and wheel bearings. Industrial applications include continuous casters, conveyors, ball mills, crushers, offshore and underwater applications.

Calcium sulfonate greases are also used in motorized steam valves to control high pressure steam. These steam valves are typically found in nuclear power plants and thermal manufacturing stations. It is also known that the calcite particles found in calcium sulfonate greases make them a good choice for high temperature applications.

Calcium sulfonate greases are generally beneficial in rust-inhibiting performance and oxidation stability is considered good or excellent. Rust inhibitors are surfactants that neutralize acids on the metal surface. They can also form an oily surface or barrier to stop rust on the surface.

What is calcium sulfonate complex grease and for which industries is it suitable?

There are many different types of grease. One of them is the calcium sulfonate complex grease. If the right grease is not used in your equipment, you could be paying too much for spare parts. The right grease, on the other hand, can allow the equipment to function properly for years without maintenance issues. The crucial thing here is to find out which grease is right for your machine’s needs. Not new to the grease market, calcium sulfonate thickeners have been used for nearly 50 years. This particular type of grease has natural extreme pressure (EP) resistance properties that make it stand out from the rest. These properties, combined with the fact that it can be formulated to be used in H-1 (food grade) applications, make it an attractive alternative to other greases. Calcium sulfonate grease is obtained by converting a liquid detergent containing amorphous calcium carbonate into a grease containing calcite particles. Due to the lubricating properties of calcite particles, performance additives that contain sulfur, phosphorus or zinc may not be needed. Therefore, some calcium sulfonate-based greases are attractive for the food industry.
 

It makes sense to use calcium sulfonate grease when the benefits outweigh or the cost is low. If an application has special requirements only this grease can meet, then it will make you profit. This grease excels in EP performance as seen in ASTM D2596 four ball EP test and ASTM D2509 Timken test. Some formulations also exhibit superior salt spray test performance. Applications that fit into this category include marine environments, drawbridges, automotive or other applications exposed to salty conditions.

Generally, the level of rust inhibition depends on the quality of the oil, although thickener additives can affect oxidation. Four ball tests show that calcium sulfonate grease is suitable for use in weights of 315 kg, 400 kg or more. The calcite particles have been described as forming a sheet or flake-like structure that creates shear planes trapped between metal surfaces. This creates a sacrificial layer on the metal that is continuously cut away. After all, it is better to cut the calcite particles from the metal on the equipment. To summarize, if your applications require H-1 approval and at the same time heat resistance or water tolerance, a calcium sulfonate grease manufactured to suit your needs will best cover your costs.
